Hongwanji 130 Years in Hawaii 1889-2019 (October 12 and October 13, 2019)
Reverend Soryu Kagahi arrived in Hawaii in March 1889 and conducted the first service. Therefore, Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii celebrates its 130th year in Hawaii this year (2019). The 130th Anniversary Event is the time to celebrate our organization in Hawaii and to bring new awareness to people about the existence of Hongwanji and its impact in various ways.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2019 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Open to the public. Admission is free. Door prizes. Presentation about Hongwanji. Interfaith dialogue on homelessness. Puna Taiko and more. Presentations include: Japanese immigrants and their descendants in Hawaii – Arnold Hiura, Hawaii Japanese Center. Hongwanji in Hawaii – Past, Present, Future, Dr. Dexter Mar, Honpa Hongwanji Betsuin. Buddhism, the Youth Generation and Engaging in the World – Hongwanji Youth. Buddhist Weddings in Hongwanjis – Rev. Katsuya Kusonoki, Seattle Betsuin Chief Minister. Interfaith Dialogue – homelessness on the Big Island and Spirituality, HOPE Service and more. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2019 10:00 a.m. – Special Sunday Service in commemoration of 130 years in Hawaii. Special guest speaker: Rev. Katsuya Kusunoki, Seattle Betsuin Rimban Chief Minister. Special guest: Bishop Eric Matsumoto, Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. Ministers’ and members’ panel discussion: Theme: “N-A-M-O-A-M-I-D-A-B-U-T-S-U: find out what it means to me”.
