BIBF Hanamatsuri (Buddha Day) Service – (4/4/21)

Puna Hongwanji will not have a Sunday Service on Sunday, April 4, 2021.  Instead we will be joining other temples for the Big Island Buddhist Federation (BIBF) Hanamatsuri (Buddha Day) Service at 9:00 a.m.  Each year the BIBF temples takes turns to host services in which all temples would come together, but due to Covid we will instead gather on Zoom.  This year the host temple is Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin.  The service will be available via Zoom.  There is very limited seating and those without access to Zoom there will be limited seating available.  To reserve a seat you must contact Hilo Betsuin by April 1, 2021 at (808) 961-6677.  The guest speaker will be Dr. Manulani Aluli Meyer.  Her message will be “Awakening Intelligence in These Time”.

Drive-By Pouring of Sweet Tea 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Participate in the ritual of pouring sweet tea over baby Buddha (symbolizing the sweet rain that fell when the Buddha was born).  The drive by option will be available at the Sangha Hall from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Hanamatsuri Art Contest (deadline April 3, 2021)

In celebration of Buddha’s Birthday, the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Board of Buddhist Education is sponsoring a Hanamatsuri art contest.  The contest is open to all ages.  Participants can submit a poster, photography piece, painting, written piece, or other art form related to the theme:  “Building Healthy Sanghas:  Nurturing Empathy and Respect”.  The entries will be displayed at the drive through sweet tea pouring after the BIBF Hanamatsuri service.  The entries and entry forms may be dropped off or mailed to the Hilo Betsuin temple office or submitted virtually to c.gervais@hilobetsuin.org.
