Drive-Thru Bon Dance 2021 – July 10, 2021 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Puna Hongwanji presents…Drive-Thru Bon Dance
For a second year we are unable to host our regular two nights of Bon Dance on our temple grounds. In 2020 we did a virtual bon dance. In 2021 we are doing a partial virtual bon dance and a live drive thru bon dance. We will have 4 dancing tents set up for you to enjoy watching the dance from the comforts of your car as you drive-thru our parking lot. The event will be held on the Puna Hongwanji temple grounds on Saturday, July 10, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. We will have bon dance music playing and dancers. The Puna Taiko will be drumming along to the songs. We know it won’t be the same, but it will give you some way to enjoy the bon dance season in a different way.
Entrance will be from the lower parking area on the Hilo side. You will enter through the gates and drive past the tents with the dancers. There was a limited amount of pre-order plate lunches. During that time people will be picking up their plate lunches during the drive thru also so please be patient. Like a regular bon dance we have a table set-up to collect donations. Those that make a donation will be given a bon dance towel.
There will be no parking allowed or people getting out of their cars to wander on the temple grounds. We are allowed to have a limited amount of people on the temple grounds at one time, so we would appreciate you staying in your car at all times. If you plan to put your window down we ask that you wear your mask.
From 5:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. we will be going live to share the bon dance experience on our social media.
