Peace Day Weekend Events for September 20 – 21- 22, 2019

The International Day of Peace and Peace Day in Hawaii are recognized on September 21 of year year.  The Hongwanji Hawaii Jr. Young Buddhist Association (Jr. YBA) which consist of five districts – Maui, Kauai, Honolulu, Oahu, and Big Island in 2007 submitted a resolution to establish a Hongwanji Peace Day to the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii Legislative Assembly.  On April 18, 2007, Governor Linda Lingle signed the bill making Hawaii the first state in the United States to recognize September 21 as Peace Day.

A weekend filled with events are being planned.

Friday, September 20, 2019 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. we will have a Peaceful Twilight Gathering at the Puna Hongwanji Buddhist Temple in our Social Hall.  Heavy pupus will be provided.  We will spread the sound of Peace with music and short messages.

Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. is the 13th annual parade and festival for the United Nations International Day of Peace in Honokaa.  Puna Hongwanji will be submitting an application to participate in the parade.  We will meet at Puna Hongwanji Temple at 8:00 a.m. to leave at 8:15 a.m.  Those participating will need to be at the staging area at the Honokaa High School football field parking lot by 10:00 a.m.

Sunday, September 22, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. will be the Puna Hongwanji Autumn Ohigan and Peace Day Sunday Service.  Guest speaker will be Rev. Bert Sumikawa.  After the temple service a Peace Day Dharma talk story session will be held.
