The Puna Hongwanji Bon Dance that is normally scheduled for the first Saturday in July has been changed in 2025. This year we will be hosting the Bon Dance on the last Saturday in June. Please save Saturday, June 28, 2025.
Memorial Bon Ribbon Available Until June 8, 2025
Obon season is a time to reflect upon our lives through remembering our loved ones. We would like to invite you get Memorial Ribbon(s) to show our respect and appreciation to your departed loved ones. The ribbons will be attached to the lanterns that are decorated around the yagura (bon dance stage). The illuminated lanterns with the ribbon will give us a sense of connection and comfort with our loved ones in the compassionate embrace of Amida Buddha.
Please fill out the form online or mail in your form with your payment. Each ribbon is $20 and submissions are due by June 8, 2025.

T-Shirt Sale
We are taking pre-order for our Puna Hongwanji t-shirts. The design was created last year with the collaborative work of Reverend Tomioka’s idea and Eric Bihag’s creativity coming to life. Last year the shirts were ordered in black. This year we are taking a pre-order and ordering the shirt in sangria.

This year we will have short sleeve crewneck (men); short sleeve v-neck (women); and long sleeve crewneck in sangria.
There will be tank tops in black.

There will be some extra T-shirts available. There are also some of the black T-shirts from last year.
BON DANCE PRACTICE
Are you interested in learning new bon dances or brushing up/practicing? All are welcome to practice on WEDNESDAY from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Hilo Daijingu at 10 Anela Street, Hilo. Have fun, learn something new, and amkes new friends in the process.
Songs you will learn will be played at the Puna Hongwanji Bon Dance.
Obon is a time to remember our departed loved ones, respect, and reflect on our own lives.
Please note that last minute cancellations may occur.
LANTERN MAKING AND LANTERN PARADE
Available on Saturday, June 28, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
In rememberance of your loved ones there will be a lantern making. This year to ensure there is enough lanterns, for those interested in making them we have a reservations system. Lanter making will be available every half-hour from 3:00 p.m. and last reservation at 5:00 p.m. While supplies last there may be some extra lanterns for walk-in inquires.
At 5:45 p.m. participate in the Memorial Lantern Parade accompanied by Puna Tako.
