Puna Hongwanji Children’s Day
COME JOIN IN ON THE FUN. We will be hosting another Children’s Day event at Puna Hongwanji on Saturday, April 19, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please bring your children as there will be games and activities for the children and the children young at heart. All are welcome. Bring your family and friends along with you for some fun.
As of March 14 we have the following that will be available at the event.
- Purchase game cards to play games and win some prizes
- CU Hawaii FCU – financial fun
- Hawaii Police Department – Free Keiki ID
- Hawaii Fire Department – will have 3 trucks
- Hilo High School Japan Club – make a koinobori
- Ben Franklin Craft – demo Gyutaku Printing and Make It Take It – One Straw Lei
- Pahala Taiko – Maki sushi (see below for pre-orders due by April 5th)
- Puna Taiko – Andagi (under the red tent 4/$5)
- Malama Haloa Hui Kui Kalo – learn to pound your own pa’i ‘ai
- Hilo Intermediate Intramural Club – outdoor activities
- Big Island Active – Cake Walk (Musical Chairs)
- Concession – Puna Hongwanji BWA (chili/rice and water)
- Concession – Puna Hongwanji Judo (see menu below)
- Concession – Puna Hongwanji Scouts (boba tea)
- E.M. Awareness – Genki Balls
- Puna Hongwanji Judo- Easter Basket and crafts
- Puna Hongwanji Scouts – Cornhole Game/Scout Discount Card
- Kabuto Hats and Koi’s have been folded for the children to color
- Make your own Kokeshi Doll
- Institute for Native Pacific Education and Culture (INPEACE) – make a bunny headband
- Maika’i Health – informational booth and activity
- Puna Hongwanji – informational booth
- Photo opportunity with Pikachu. Pikachu will be making an appearance so be sure to check out the photo area with the cherry blossom backdrop.
Hidden Golden Eggs
Be on the look out for some golden eggs that are being hidden. When you find an egg bring it to the game ticket/passport table to claim your prize. One prize per person only. Let other children have the opportunity to win a prize as well.
Passport Fun
Get a passport and visit the different stations. Get a stamp from each of the station to fill up your passport booklet. Visit 9 of 12 stations and be eligible to enter for a prize drawing. Those that have 9 or more stamps will have their names entered for a prize drawing. Reed Takaaze Photography has donated a family photo session with previews.

Pahala Hongwanji Taiko Maki Sushi Fundraiser
The Pahala Hongwanji Taiko will be participating in our Puna Hongwanji Children’s Day event. For their fundraiser they will be taking pre-orders for their maki sushi. Proceeds from this will be donated to support Pahala Hongwanji Mission and Pahala Hongwanji Taiko.

Sushi will be $6 a roll and there will be two types of sushi available.
- REGULAR ROLL: Rice, sugar, vinegar, salt, shoyu, egg, tuna, kanpyo, and nori
- VEGETARIAN ROLL: Rice, sugar, vinegar, salt, shoyu, egg, carrot, kanpyo, and nori

Puna Hongwanji Taiko Andagi Sale
Puna Taiko will be making andagi for the Children’s Day event. You can do pre-orders at https://www.punataiko.com/
Andagi are 4/$5. Fundraiser is to help the group attend the North American Taiko Conference in Phoenix, AZ in August 2025.
