The altar stands as the central religious presence within Puna Hongwanji. It reflects Amida Buddha’s virtue and is carefully designed to create a serene and respectful atmosphere through its ornaments and arrangement. The temple and its ministers are entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining the altar in beautiful condition. To preserve its quality, the altar requires major refurbishment every 40 to 50 years.
If you would like to support the Altar Refurbishment Project, please complete the form below. Donations may be given toward the main altar table refurbishment or the entire altar project, and may also be made in memory of a loved one or in honor of someone special.
Checks may be made payable to Puna Hongwanji Mission with the note “Altar Project.” All contributions will be placed in the Altar Project Fund under Building Maintenance.

The altar consists of various decorations, structural elements, and sacred items. The first major item scheduled for refurbishment is the main temple altar table*, estimated at $20,000 plus tax and shipping. The overall project goal is $500,000, which includes refurbishment, new purchases, shipping, related costs, and general altar needs. Please note that final costs may vary depending on material and labor conditions at the time of order.

Your legacy becomes part of the torch carried by the Puna Hongwanji altars, welcoming people and embracing future generations while honoring those who came before us.
For the entire altar, it may look fine at a glance; however, damage, fading, and signs of deterioration have been identified.
*Main Altar Table: The blackened spots show where the gold leaf has worn off, been scratched, or faded. The original gold and colors were once much brighter and more vivid.
